Another fun Halloweenie!  We stuck with the Ketchup and Mustard, Jake was Ironman (interesting fact, he never wore the mask or looked at the camera...Buck is so clever), John was Deoxis (a Pokémon) Buck made his costume and John helped a little.  Super cool.  Will was a dragon and would have nothing to do with the hat.  Eve was a Clemson twirler, and Ellie was a Clemson cheerleader.  I was really pleased with how their costumes came together.
This was how Jake preferred to wear his costume.  I finally had to pin it together in the back.  Jake probably enjoyed Halloween the most.  I manned the grill while Buck took the kids trick-or-treating, but I hear he was very excited to say "Trick or treat" and "Thank you!" at every door.  When he got back he sat quietly in a chair and ate candy until we made him go inside to bed.  Apparently he thought he had to eat it all in one night...and he did a pretty good job.  He's a big fan of Halloween!

Our neighbor, Eric, is a senior in high school now.  He was in Kindergarten when we moved in.  Wow.  At one of our first Halloweenies, maybe the first, he dressed as Elvis and played songs for everyone, making them up as he went.  He's been taking lessons for several years, and played more years that not along the way.  Now he's quite good and in a band.  He told us as we were setting up that he wasn't going to play this year.  I told him we gave him his start, and he better not be too good for us now.  Buck said he expected the whole band.  I guess we're good at making people feel guilty.  They played all night, and I have to say, it wasn't quite as cute as his first performance, but was a lot more fun to listen to.
Grandma and our friends Shannon and Dana came to help.  We couldn't pull this off without help!
346 hotdogs served this year, and we probably couldn't done another 50.  Another super fun year!

Will is ONE!

This happened...and I'm in denial.

What a sweet little boy we have!  I love every roll!  Will is a chatterbox, although he doesn't really have any words yet.  He talks with his hands and motions to everything as he babbles away.  He has started to play ball.  He hands the ball to someone, expects them to hand it back, and then repeats several times.  It's probably his favorite game.  He loves to be outside.  He loves to eat.  He wants whatever you're having.  He likes to read (i.e. point to pictures and flip pages around) for short periods of time.  He enjoys his siblings, but is already quite a professional tattler when they've taken something from him or done something he doesn't like.  He will push Jake out of my lap (and vice versa).  He walks with purpose, belly out, and usually straight toward someone with arms open wide for a big hug.  He is such a love bug, and I have to say that's my favorite part.  I so love this little boy.

Talking With Their Hands

Ellie's Kindergarten teachers are awesome.  They teach a lot of sign language in class.  Ellie can sign the story "Brown Bear Brown Bear" and has a cute little song to go with it.  She likes to use it as often as possible, particularly at the dinner table.
Jake also likes to talk with his hands but in a different way.  We've noticed it since well before the summer.  His hands are always a part of his speech.  It started with holding them out (sort of like and innocent, "I don't know...I didn't do it" way) whenever he was talking.  I don't know if that started because he was often trying to avert trouble or didn't quite know the right answer to the question at hand.  He later moved to holding one finger up while he talked.  Now he mostly holds one finger up, but also wiggles all of his fingers on the same hand if he's thinking hard or excited.  It's really cute.
Will seems to be picking up on the talking with his hands trend.  Whenever he's babbling, he's pointing around to whatever he's talking about.  I'm really not sure who they're getting this from, but it's cute.

11 Months

I don't know how in the world sweet Will is already 11 months.  I have the cutest pictures of the sweet little booger, and still can't figure out how to upload them.  Bummer!  He is such a treat.  He's started taking steps.  About 2 weeks ago is was 2.  Now we've counted up to 21.  I wouldn't say he's walking yet, but he sure is building up confidence and trying to step more often.  I am so not ready for this!  I did my best to discourage it, but who listens to me when there are 4 eager older siblings giving LOTS of encouragement.  I finally gave in.  Will has also turned into quite the chatter mouth, and is taking a new interest in reading every now and then.  Such a fun fun little man.

English Lessons

If Will never speaks English, I'll know why.  I think I've already mentioned that Jake calls him "Willie Baggie".  Not sure why, but that's what he calls him...all the time, not just here and there.  It's to the point that everyone else even calls him that here and there.
On top of that, the other day Buck was home in the morning.  Usually Buck heads out to work before everyone else gets up.  This time, though, he was there when Jake greeted Will in the morning.  The greeting didn't really register with me because I hear similar greetings all the time, but Buck was thoroughly entertained when he heard Jake eagerly announce, "Slappa poopa, Willie Baggie!"  I've also heard, "Yippie dippie!" and many other nonsense combinations.  To date, though, "slappa poopa" is our favorite and is working its way into every-day vocabulary in the house.  It's fun, but poor Will may have horrible struggles with the English language...and his name, for that matter.

Back To School!!!

Well, I'm having computer issues.  Call it user error, call it a learning curve, call it what you will, but I can't figure out how to do what I used to do so easily with pictures on my new system.  One day soon, it will be awesome!  For now, I'm just going to have to catch up with words.

Since my last big catch up, we had a fabulous trip to the beach.  I also have great pictures of peach picking, which was a blast!  There's more in there, but I'll have to post pictures to jog my memory.  At any rate, this is supposed to be about BACK TO SCHOOL!

This summer absolutely flew by!  Between swim team, camps, etc, I really don't know where summer went.  Still, by the end of the summer, the kids are so done with spending every waking (and sleeping) moment together, and they're ready for school to start.  And I'm not gonna lie, I'm pretty ready for it to start by that point too!  There's something refreshing about returning to a structure.  At the same time, there's a stress level that comes from it that always makes me pine for summer again, and just getting to relax with the family.

So, two and a half weeks ago, school happened.  Since I can't post pictures from the first day, I'll make a word picture of the first day.  Our morning schedule is crazy.  The boys and I load up in the van at 7:05 while the girls are still getting ready so we can drop John off around the corner for carpool.  When we get back there's just enough time to finish getting the girls ready and off on their way.  Of course the first day is harder because of crazy traffic and walking kids in, and it's our first day with John's carpool.  The night before we laid everything out perfectly, and I made a minute by minute timeline of exactly how everything needed to run.  On top of all that, I'm supposed to get pictures.  Right?  So, we all manage to get up and dressed.  Breakfast is ready, or already eaten.  I get the boys out to the car to go to carpool, and it won't start.  Seriously.  On the first day.  That didn't exactly fit into my minute by minute plan.  Later while taking pictures of the girls, I noticed Ellie's dress was on backwards.  She didn't want to fix it.  She pitched a fit while changing it inside, and thus left her backpack behind.  She noticed that half way to school in the middle of nasty traffic, and pitched another fit because I wouldn't go back and get it.  We were late.  Oh well.  5 Alive was my big goal for the summer.  We officially made it!  Everyone made it to school and was even wearing clothes.  I call that a win.

This is a super huge year of transitions for us!  First, nobody is in preschool.  It feels weird!  Jake, Will, and I have the whole day to ourselves without the awkward drop off and pick up times in between.  We went to the zoo the first week of school.  It's the first time Jake and Will have been able to enjoy it at their own pace.  I feel like I've jumped back in time to before John and Eve were in preschool.  There's an element of it that's so so so fun and great.  There's also an element of it where I realize the zoo is full of mommy groups with their small children, and all of my mommy groups have, for the most part, gone back to work or are doing other things now.  Still, I'm so excited to have this time with Jake and Will that they can finally slow down a bit and be their age, and I can enjoy that age with them.  I'm very excited for that this year.

Next big transition, my little Ellie started KINDERGARTEN!!!  I still can't believe it!  We walked in for meet the teacher and Eve was with us. They assumed we were just early for Eve's because surely Ellie is too small for Kindergarten.  She still has her baby face and chubby baby knuckles, and her sweet little voice.  At the same time, she has thinned down and grown up so much (even though she's still pretty short), and she's obviously so ready for Kindergarten.  We were absolutely thrilled to see she's gotten Mrs. Ferrell and Mrs. Smith.  They were Eve's teachers in Kindergarten, and I can't say enough how amazing and wonderful and fun they are!  Two weeks in, and Ellie is already signing the whole Brown Bear story.  It's very sweet and amazing.  She is so excited, and I couldn't be more thrilled.  The first day she walked right in and sat down with the class no problem.  When she came home on the bus, though, she got of last...in tears.  Oh no!  I was so worried.  Turns out she just had a misunderstanding and thought she wasn't going to be able to get off the bus.  Of course, she'd dead tired and everything is new, so she just broke down.  The second day, we did car line and Eve was so sweet to offer to walk Ellie to her class.  It made my heart swell.  We've been all smiles ever since then.  Tired and a little cranky some days after school, but that's par for the course in Kindergarten.

Eve is our stronghold.  She's the one with no big transition this year.  She knows all about where she is and what she's doing, and she's doing great with it!  Her teacher is Mrs. Haynes.  I don't know much about her.  She's maybe not the warmest fuzziest teacher, but I think Eve will do well in her class and learn a lot.  As I said, she's been a great big sister to Ellie, and has been a shining star in her class in so many different ways already.  She's been very responsible this year so far, and I'm noticing a lot of maturing that's happened since this time last year. I'm so proud of her.  This doesn't have anything to do with school, but I've also noticed how caring she is toward others.  She is really blossoming in that area.  She's playing soccer, and when one girl got hurt, Eve was the one to stop playing and check on her (at 6 and 7 years old, they're often oblivious to that sort of thing).  It's just kind of who Eve is.

John is also going through a big transition.  We had a rough summer.  I don't know how much of it had to do with age, or if any had to do with anticipating a new school and all the changes that entails.  He's really becoming (or I'm starting to notice more) an introvert, and being around 2 sisters and 2 little brothers day in and day out over the summer doesn't really lend itself well to that.  We had several talks this summer about lots of things, but I've been eagerly anticipating this school change as a possible help.  Last year John scored extremely well on a standardized test given to all 2nd graders.  He was invited to attend Charles Townes Center, which is a program housed at the Sterling School.  It's a program for academically gifted kids that runs grades 3-8.  When we went to the open house last spring, we were immediately sold on the program.  It fits him to a tee.  We are so proud of him for qualifying.  At the same time, it's a brand new school about 30 minutes from home.  The program is very tough.  Their goal is to challenge each of the kids.  The word "stressful" was used at least 20 times during meet the teacher (only in front of the parents), but at the same time, they really encouraged us that they will support us and we'll all make it through OK.  It is going to be a fantastic experience for John.  He is going to learn to fail and be humbled, but he will be so much stronger, smarter, and well rounded, and he most certainly won't be bored!  Even with Ellie starting Kindergarten, I think this transition has been the hardest on me, but at the same time I'm so excited for it.  John's teacher is Mrs. Merritt, and she is unbelievable!  He's enjoying everything so far and it hasn't been too much of a shock.  Today, though, is the first time the homework has been really over his head.  He was frustrated and about to throw things down (he's never had to deal much with frustration, so he's not good at it).  I was so proud of him, though, we worked hard through it.  He tends toward lazy, but tonight he really pulled up his boot straps, and by the end was smiling about it...even after bed time.  I was just so proud of his work ethic and persistence.  That's what I think he's going to gain from this program.  We're all going to grow some gray hairs in the process, though, that's for sure!

Dress Up

The other day Eve asked if she could look through my jewelry while I folded clothes.  I really enjoyed telling her the story behind each piece, particularly since some of them are quite old.  I suggested that the girls might like to play dress up in some of my old bridesmaids dresses and play with some of my jewelry.  I don't think I've ever heard so much silliness and giggling.  It was so fun for them, and so much fun for me to watch.  I think they were most impressed with the "Big Boobie Dress", which had a cardboard bodice in it.  It was hilarious and so cute.

July 4

We haven't been home for the 4th in several years.  This year we were invited to a bike parade in the neighborhood.  We went all out.  It was so fun!

Ellie's A Nitrofish Too!

On a whim I decided to sign Ellie up for Jr. Swim Team rather than Guppies (guppies is basically swim lessons, while Jr. Swim Team is more like regular swim team).  The first day of practice she forgot everything she ever learned about swimming and barely made it away from the side of the pool.  By the next to last meet, Ellie had made it all the way across the pool, so I agreed to let her swim in the meet.  She was so excited and ready!

...and a little bit nervous.
I love that personality on her face!
She was so brave, she even dove off the blocks!  I was worried she'd freeze up and decide not to dive in, but she did it!
She swam her little heart out!  Until she got about halfway across the pool and noticed everyone was watching her.  Then she kept swimming, but started to struggle, and maybe cry a little bit.
Her coach jumped in to help.  Everyone thinks Ellie is my sweet little compliant child.  I was told when Coach Abby came it to help Ellie said, "Let go of me!"
She got out all by herself.  Apparently if your coach jumps in and gives you a few pushes toward the finish, it's considered a DQ.
Doughnuts and ribbons afterward, Ellie didn't care she was disqualified.  She was thrilled to have swum in her first meet!  She was convinced that our pool was shorter, so she tried again the next week.  She did awesome and made it all the way across all by herself!  Her coach had the hold the lifeguards back because they were worried, but we all knew she was fine.  We're so proud of her!  Now she's learned a little of backstroke and butterfly and is (as far as she's concerned) a certified professional and ready to rock it at every meet next year!

Swimming Swimming In The Swimming Pool

We had another great swim season!  John and Eve were both on the 8 and under team.  This year both of them took it a little more seriously and got a little more of a competitive spirit.  Being the oldest and one of the biggest in his age group, John did really well.  Both of them shaved some major time off of their records from last year.  They really enjoy it, and I really enjoy it too.  It makes me wish I had been a swimmer.  They've agreed to help show me the ropes.  These are in no particular order.
Eve just finished a race.  Always a smile on her face.
